Es war aufregend zu be- obachten, wie das Problem, bildbeschreibende Strukturen systematisch zu verwalten, seine - sungsansatze mehr und mehr aus der Theorie der Da_tenbanken bezog. Der Autor dieses Buches, Wolfgang Benn, nahm die Muhe aufsich, in zwei Gebieten der Infor- matik, Bildverarbeitung und Datenbanksysteme, zu Hause sein zu miissen. Es ist ihm gelun- gen, in beiden Bereichen den Stand der Kenntnisse zu mehren. DaB dabei ganz fremd erschei- nende Ideen zusammengefuhrt wurden, hat uns beide auBerordentlich gefreut. Die Verwendung relationaler Strukturen zur Beschreibung von Bildern legte den Gedanken nahe, zu ihrer Verwaltung relationale Datenbanken einzusetzen. Dem Anspruch, komplexe, erst zur Zeit der Auswertung der zu beschreibenden Bilder bekannte Strukturen zu manipulie- ren, wuchs die Entwicklung derTheorie des "Non-First-Normal-Form"-Relationenmodells ent- gegen. Dies war ein Ansporn, der Wolfgang Benn zu einer Weiterentwicklung in Richtung dy- namischer Modelle flihrte. Gleichzeitig bettete er damit den Umgang mit Relationengebilden zur Beschreibung in den Formalismus der relationalen Algebra ein.
