About The Book

Die Vorlesung zur Einfiihrung in die hOhere Mathematik, die GEORG FEIGL wahrend seiner Lehrtatigkeit an der Universitat Berlin von 1920 bis 1934 regelmaBig jedes Semester gelesen hat, diente einem doppelten Zweck. Sie sollte den Studierenden den "Obergang yom Schulunterricht zu dem so ganz anders gearteten Unterricht durch Vorlesungen er- leichtern, und sie sollte zugleich fur die Dozenten die Anfangervorlesun- gen in stofflicher Hinsicht entlasten. In der Analytischen Geometrie mochte man die Grundbegriffe der Vektoralgebra und der Matrizen- rechnung als Hilfsmittel verwenden, ohne sich lange daruber auslassen zu mussen, und in der Infinitesimalrechimng muB man auf einem ge- sicherten Begriff der reellen Zahl aufbauen, zu dessen Begrundung innerhalb der Vorlesung jedoch die Zeit nicht ausreicht. Diese beiden Ziele haben den Charakter der FEIGLSchen Einfuhrungs- vorlesung sowie die Auswahl des in ihr behandelten Stoffes bestimmt, wobei im einzelnen auch ERHARD SCHMIDT maBgeblicher Berater war. Die eine Anfangervorlesung begleitend, die andere vorbereitend, dabei in der Darstellung an die Unterrichtsmethoden der Schule anknupfend, hat die "Einfiihrung" vielen Generationen von Mathematikstudierenden in Berlin Freude und Nutzen gebracht. Es ist zu erwarten, daB sie auch in der vorliegenden Buchform geeignet ist, die Anfangsschwierig- keiten des Mathematikstudiums uberwinden zu helfen und daruber hinaus all denen Einblicke in die hohere Mathematik zu vertnitteln, die sich aus Liebhaberei oder aus beruflichem Interesse mit dieser Wissenschaft beschaftigen wollen. V orausgesetzt wird lediglich einiges aus der Schulmathematik sowie einmal (Kap. IV, 3) der Fundamental- satz der- Algebra.
