Die industrielle Steuerungstechnik ist in einem Umbruch begriffen, der nicht zuletzt durch die Moglichkeiten der hochintegrierten elektroni- schen Bauelemente und Mikrorechner ausgelost wurde. Diese Technologien ermoglichen es jetzt, den Forderungen nach groBter Flexibilitat der Steuerungen entgegen zu kommen. Frliher muBten diese Forderungen zwangs- laufig zurlickgestellt werden. Jetzt, wo ihre Erflillung moglich wird, werden sie verstarkt gestellt und wirken so als treibende Kraft. Die etwa in den letzten beiden Jahrzehnten entwickelten Methoden zur Steuerungssynthese - allen voran das Huffman'sche Verfahren samt allen Folgearbeiten - gingen zunachst von der klassischen Automatentheorie aus. Aus dieser Theorie hat sich nach und nach ein ingenieurmaBiger Zweig und eine eigene abstrakte Disziplin weiter entwickelt, die aber nach wie vor auch den Ingenieuren wertvolle Impulse erteilt. Die nach den klassischen, aus der Automatentheorie hervorgegangenen Methoden entwor- fenen Steuerungen sind "fest verdrahtet"; sie sind individuell auf die jeweilige Aufgabe zugeschnitten. Dies ist also die eine Richtung in der Schaltungsrealisierung: Die Flexibilitat wird hier weitgehend vermiBt. Beim Entwurf auftretende Schwierigkeiten suchte man durch rechnerge- stlitzte Synthese zu vermeiden. Der Wunsch nach groBerer Flexibilitat flihrte bald zur Verwendung von Schrittregistern, die sich bei sog. Zwangsfolgesteuerungen bewahrten, also bei Steuerungen deren Eingangsbelegungen nur in vorgepragter Form auftreten konnen. Solche meist mit Arbeitszylindern realisierte Systeme haben einen sehr wesentlichen Anteil an industriellen Steuerungen. Schrittregister sind zwar fest programmiert, aber der Freiraum flir Pro- grammanderungen ist bereits sehr groB.
