In dem Lehrbuch wird das Spannungsfeld zwischen Integration und Autonomie der Mitgliedstaaten in der Europäischen Union analysiert. Dabei werden der Agrar-, Kohäsions- und Geldpolitik, bei denen eine starke Vergemeinschaftung vorliegt, solche Politikbereiche gegenübergestellt, bei denen die Mitgliedstaaten ihre Autonomie nach dem Subsidiaritätsprinzip gewahrt haben. Dies ist u. a. bei der Finanz-, Steuer- Fiskal-, Beschäftigungs-, Lohn- und Sozialpolitik gegeben. Die Koordinationsprobleme werden ausführlich behandelt. Am Beispiel der Sozialpolitik werden die Vorteile einer Koordinierung gegenüber einer Harmonisierung aufgezeigt. Das Lehrbuch schlie t mit einer kritischen Bewertung des europäischen Sozialmodells. In der Neuauflage werden die institutionellen Änderungen durch den Lissabonvertrag sowie die Politik der EU in der Finanzkrise dargestellt und die theoretische Analyse ausgeweitet.

Herrmann Ribhegge geboren 1948 in Attendorn, Studium der Volkswirtschaftslehre und Mathematik an der Universität Münster, 1973 Diplom-Volkswirt, 1976 Dr. rer. pol. und 1985 Habilitation an der Universität Münster, seit 1992 Professor für Volkswirtschaftslehre, insbesondere Wirtschafts- und Sozialpolitik, an der Europa-Universität Frankfurt (Oder), Forschungsgebiete: Arbeitsmarkt- sowie Institutionenökonomik, Sozialpolitik und Europäische Wirtschaftspolitik.
