Der Begriff Geostatistik, wohl zuerst in den fiinfziger/sechziger Jahren als geostatistique im Franzosischen gebraucht, umfa13t aIle in den Geowissenschaf- ten angewandten statistischen Theorien, Schatz- und Schlu13verfahren. Ein wichtiges Teilgebiet ist die Theorie der Zufallsproze8se und ihre Anwendung auf die in Raum und Zeit zufallig schwankenden Funktionen und Felder. Vber Zufallsprozesse existieren hervorragende mathematische Werke, die aller- dings nur von den Theoretikern, weniger von den Anwendern ausgeschopft werden konnen. Technisch orientierte Biicher, etwa der Regelungstechnik und Systemtheorie, behandeln vorzugsweise eindimensionale Zufallsprozesse; sie sind fiir den Anwender leichter zuganglich, sofern er mit der speziellen Fach- terminologie zurechtkommt. Obwohl die Geowissenschaften selbst nicht un- wesentlich zur Entwicklung der Theorie der Zufallsprozesse beigetragen haben, sind ausfiihrlichere Darstellungen mit geowissenschaftlichen Anwendungen - abgesehen von speziellen Monographien zur Turbulenztheorie, Filtertheorie u. a. - nicht eben zahlreich. Die einschlagigen deutschsprachigen, fiir den Anwender bestens geeigneten Lehrbiicher von TAUBENHEIM (1969) und SOHON- WIESE (1985) bieten ein breites Spektrum an statistischen Theorien, Auswerte- und Priifverfahren, - mit Ausnahme der fiir die Geowissenschaften so wich- tigen mekrdimensionalen Prozesse auf der Kugel (globale Probleme) und im euklidischen Raum (lokale Probleme). So mag die vorliegende Einfiihrung in die Theorie der Zufallsprozesse, welche sowohl die ein- als auch die mehrdimensionalen Prozesse umfa13t und an geowissenschaftlichen Aufgabenstellungen orientiert ist, ausreichend motiviert sein.
