Das Schrifhum iiber Glaukom bis 1908 ist von SCHMIDT-RIMPLER gesammelt, ab 1908-1930 von PETERS. Seitdem ist die Glaukomliteratur erheblich angewachsen und kaum mehr zu iiberblicken. Sammelreferate (s. erster Teil, E) umfassen jeweils nur einige Jahre. Sie sind nach verschiedenen Gesichtspunkten gegliedert und enthalten kein Stichworterverzeichnis, wodurch man sich schwer zurechtfindet. In diesem Buch wird versucht, das Schrifhum von 1930-1957/58 zu sammeln und in einem zusammenhangenden Text zu besprechen. Es solI mehr ein Handbuch zum Nachschlagen als ein Lehrbuch sein. Zum Verstandnis seines Inhaltes werden augen- arztliche Kenntnisse vorausgesetzt. Grundlegendes Wissen, iiber das in unserer Be- richtszeit keine Arbeiten erschienen sind, wurde nicht besprochen (z. B. Aussehen der Exkavation, Differentialdiagnose des akuten Glaukoms, usw. ). Die kurze Beschreibung der Operationen ohne Abbildungen solI eine Operationslehre nicht ersetzen, sondern den Kenner auf wesentliche Einzelheiten hinweisen. In manchen Kapiteln wurden widersprechende Ansichten oder weniger bedeutende Arbeiten zunachst ohne eigene StelIungnahme erwahnt, weil der Zweck des Buches die moglichst volIsilindige Literatur- iibersicht ist. Der Autor eines Lehrbuches kann solche verwirrend oder trocken wir- kenden Stellen vermeiden, indem er die Arbeiten auswahlt, die sich seinem Text ein- fiigen. Hier jedoch war dies nicht immer moglich, wenngleich das Zusammenfassen des Inhaltes vieler Arbeiten in Obersichtslisten oft einen Ausweg bot. Die dargestelIten Meinungen stimmen keineswegs immer mit meinen eigenen iiberein, die zu Beginn oder am Ende eines Kapitels mitgeteilt sind, wenn es nicht moglich war, sie in den Text ein- zuarbeiten.
