Dieses Buch wendet sich an mathematisch interessierte Ingenieure, die auf dem Gebiete des Operations Research eigene, uber den Routine- rahmen hinausgehende Beitrage leisten wollen. An Gelegenheiten, die folgenden Darlegungen in der Praxis zu gebrauchen, wird es gewiB nicht mangeln. Die Hoffnung des Verfassers ist es, sie seien in einer Form erfolgt, die ihre konkrete Verwertung moglichst muhelos gestattet, so daB sich neben die ZweckmaBigkeit ihrer Anwendung auch noch das Interesse und die Freude am Experimentieren gesellen. Das Buch gliedert sich in vier Kapitel, denen jeweils knappe Literaturhinweise zugedacht sind. Herr Prof. Dr. P. HUBER von der Eidgenossischen Technischen Hochschule und Herr Privatdozent Dr. P. KALL von der Universitat Zurich haben einige Partien des Manu- skripts gelesen und sehr wertvolle Kritik geleistet; hierfur mochte ich ihnen bestens danken. Mein besonderer Dank aber gilt Herrn Prof. Dr. W. SAXER von der Eidgenossischen Technischen Hochschule, der zwar die Entstehung dieses Buches personlich nicht mitverfolgt hat; trotz- dem ware es ohne ihn wohl niemals zustande gekommen, denn er war mein Lehrer, der mein Interesse an mathematischen Fragen wachrief und farderte und den ich stets hoch verehren werde.
