Das Vitamiu A ist, wie sich aus vielen Experimenten ergibt, ein Antago- nist des Thyroxius und des thyreotropen 1I0rmons. Der B-Komplex ist ohne EinfluB. Vitamiu C-Mangel fiihrt bei 70'% der Versuchstiere zur Hyperthyreose. Das Vitamin C besitzt auch gewisse antithyreotrope Fahigkeiten, ebenso zeigt das Vitamin D hemmende Eigenschaften. AuBer von diesen iuneren Faktoren ist die Schilddriise noch von einer Reihe von Umweltfaktoren abhangig. Es finden sich Unterschiede der histologischen Struktur und der GroBe des Organs abhangig von der geographischen Lage des Ortes, an dem das betreffende Individuum lebt. Die Faktoren, die hierfiir maB- gebend sind, liegen zum Teil in dem verschiedenen Jodgehalt der Nahrung und des Trinkwassers, zum Teil in noch unbekannten Einfliissen des Bodens. Der Jodzufuhr kommt ein besonderer EinfluB auf die Schilddriisentatigkeit zu .. Jod fordert in kleineren Dosen die Kolloidbildung und wirkt in durchaus ahnlicher Weise wie das eben erwahnte Dijodtyrosin. In hoheren Dosen bewirkt es eine Aktivierung der Schilddriise und die kolloidspeichernde Eigenschaft schlagt in das Gegenteil urn. So ist Jodzufuhr nicht selten die Ursache fiir eiuen Basedow. Hohenlage wirkt dampfend, starke Abkiihlung wirkt fordernd, Erwarmung hem- mend. Sehr groB ist auch der EinflufJ der Erniihrung. EiweiBreiche Kost steigert die Empfindlichkeit von Ratten gegeniiber Thyroxin, eiweiBarme setzt sie herab. In letzter Zeit haben die Beziehungen der Vitam'ine zur Schildd1'u8entatigkeit erhohte Beachtung erfahren. Bei BI-Mangel ist die Schilddriise unterwertig. Vitamin A und C sind in der Lage, die Wirkungen des Thyroxius abzuschwachen.
