Erkrankungen der Lendenwirbelsaule mit Beteiligung des Nervensy- stems stell en ein Thema dar, das an Bedeutung hinter den 1982 behandel- ten Erkrankungen der Halswirbelsaule nicht zuriicksteht. Es ware aller- dings anmaBend, im Rahmen einer solchen Arbeitstagung einen nur anna- hernd vollstandigen Oberblick iiber Morphologie, Pathologie und Klinik der Lendenwirbelsaule geben zu wollen. Aus dem heute bereits kaum mehr iibersehbaren Feld sind deshalb nur einige, flir die Praxis besonders wichtig erscheinende, aktuelle Aspekte herausgegriffen worden. Wichtig auch deshalb, weil bekanntermaBen der groBen Anzahl voriibergehend oder dauernd invalidisierender Lendenwirbelsaulenerkrankungen eine ganz enorme sozialmedizinische und volkswirtschaftliche Bedeutung zu- kommt. Lendenwi belleiden verursachen haufig langdauernde Arbeitsun- fahigkeit, hohe Behandlungskosten, aufwendige RehabilitationsmaBnah- men und flihren nicht selten zur Friihinvaliditat. Sie verbrauchen damit einen nicht unerheblichen Teil des erarbeiteten Gesamteinkommens der Bevolkerung. In Schweden rechnet man z. B., nach lunghanns, daB bei gleichbleibendem Ansteigen der Forderung nach optimaler medizinischer Versorgung in 40-501ahren die gesamte erwerbstatige Bevolkerung nur noch im Dienste des Gesundheitswesens tatig sein wird. Infolge des hohen prozentualen Anteiles der Wirbelsaulenerkrankungen wird dann, nach Ansicht von Junghanns, ein betrachtlicher Teil der Bevolkerung nur noch fur die Wirbelsaule arbeiten.
