Die vorliegende Themensammlung entstand aus Diskussionen mit Studenten, die an Spezialkursen uber zell- und mole- kularbiologische Methodon teilnehmen und mit Kollegen, die solche Kurse abhalten. Wir gewannen den Eindruck, daB es gegenw rtig relativ wenig gut zug ngliche Litera- tur gibt, welche allgemeinverst ndlich die breite Palet- te der aktuellen Themen und Methoden der Molekular- und Zellbiologie behandelt. Bei der Vorbereitung des vorlie- genden Bandes haben wir vor allem auf die Aktualit t der Themen Wert gelegt und weniger eine Vollst ndigkeit einer Gesamtmonographie angestrebt. Auch wurde bewuBt darauf verzichtet, detaillierte Arbeitsanleitungen zu vermitteln. Aufgrund unseres personlichen wissenschaftlichen Engage- ments haben wir drei Schwerpunkte gesetzt (Charakteri- sierung spezieller Proteine; DNA Analyse; Funktionsun- tersuchungen an Genen und Chromosomen). Die Beitr ge sind so konzipiert, daB neben Spezialinformation auch Querver- bindungen zu Nachbargebieten und ubergreifenden Techniken vermittelt werden sollten. Der Leser wird betont darauf verwiesen auf solche Uberschneidungen zu achten, da sie zu den Charakteristika der aktuellen biologischen For- schung gehoren. Als Ergebnis entstand eine Sammlung von Kapiteln mit zweierlei Akzentsetzung: einerseits Ubersichtsartikel mit Allgemeindarstellung und punktuellen Beispielen (z.B. DNA-Klonierung), andererseits Beitr ge, die beispielhaft ein System ausfuhrlicher belichten (z.B. Membranproteine der Milchdruse). Dieses Euch ist fur Studenten im fortgeschrittenen Se- mester konzipiert, die sich einen Einblick in eine Reihe moderner Aspekte des weitumfassenden Gesamtkomplexes Zell- und Molekularbiologie verschaffen wollen. Die Herausgeber mochten an dieser Stelle allen an dem Band beteiligten Kollegen herzlich fur ihre Mitarbeit danken.
