Dem vorliegenden Lehrbuch der nichtrelativistischen Quanten theorie liegen Kursvorlesungen in Munster, Hamburg und Newark (Delaware, USA) zugrunde. Dies allein rechtfertigt es jedoch nicht, den vielen vorhandenen Lehrbuchern ein weiteres hinzuzufugen. Dass derzeit allmonatlich ein neues Lehrbuch uber Quantentheorie erscheint, darf man wohl nicht allein dem Umstand zuschreiben, dass so viele Vor lesungen uber Quantentheorie gehalten werden; vielmehr wird aus einem Teil dieser Bucher ein verbreitetes Unbehagen uber den Zustand der Lehrbuchliteratur erkennbar, welches auch mich zur Abfassung des vorliegenden Bandes veranlasst hat. Die ublichen Lehrbucher - auch neuen Datums- kultivieren noch immer die Grundzuge von Sommerfelds "Atombau und Spektrallinien," d. h. Behelfsvorstellungen, mit denen man eine damals noch unverstandene Quantenphysik in die klassische Physik einfugte; hieraus ergibt sich die unzulangliche und z. T. sogar falsche statistische Interpretation. welche insbesonalere in Lehrbuchern der statistischen Mechanik verbreitet ist. Die wenigen Bucher, welche hiervon seit langerer Zeit auszunehmen sind, namlich die von Dirac, v. Neumann und G. Ludwig, fanden in das Bewusstsein der Physiker und damit auch der Physikstudenten kaum Eingang, weil ihre abstrakt-mathematische Darstellung den Normal-Physiker nicht direkt anspricht. Hier eine Brucke zu schlagen durch ein einfuhrendes Lehrbuch, welches moglichst frei von historischem Ballast und doch physikalisch ist, war meine Absicht. Um bei diesem Bruckenschlag trotz der unvermeidlichen Anforde rungen an das Abstraktionsvermogen dem Bedurfnis nach physikalischer Anschauung entgegen zu kommen, ist der allgemeinen Theorie (Kap. 11) ein heuristisches Kapitel I vorangestellt."
