Der Erfolg, den meine "Rechenmethoden der Quantentheorie" seit nunmehr fast vierzig J ahren haben, hat mir schon lange den Gedanken nahegelegt, in tthnlicher Weise auch eine Darstellung von Gebieten der klassischen Physik zu versuchen. Ein Stamm von 50 Obungsaufgaben, die ich htiufig gestellt und deren LOsung ich zu meinem eigenen Gebrauch und dem meiner Assistenten ausgearbeitet hatte, konnten als Ausgangspunkt eines solchen Unternehmens dienen. Das Ergebnis lege ich nun vor in der Hoffnung, Kollegen wie Studenten damit eine nutzliche Hilfe an die Hand zu geben. Der eigentliche Sinn einer solchen Sammlung ist die Ergttnzung der Lehrbu- cher, in denen meist fUr die praktische mathematische DurchfUhrung konkreter Einzelfragen wenig Raum bleibt. Naturlich httngt das bis zu einem gewissen Gra- de yom persOnlichen Geschmack des Verfassers abo Richard Becker etwa gab stets physikalischem Verstttndnis mit einem Minimum an mathematischem Auf- wand den Vorzug, Arnold Sommerfeld hingegen hat nie seine besondere Freude an gescheiten mathematischen Verfahren verleugnet. Wtthrend ich in meinem 1962 erschienenen Lehrbuch urn einen mittleren Weg bemuht war, steht der hier vorgelegte Band ganz im Zeichen der Anwendung mathematischer Hilfsmittel, eben der Rechenmethoden. Demzufolge sind z. B. die statischen Felder ellipsoid- fOrmiger KOrper mit Hilfe der dabei auftretenden Legendreschen Funktionen zweiter Art oder die zylindrischen Wellenleiter und Drahtwellen mit den fUr sie charakteristischen Zylinderfunktionen ausfuhrlicher als ublich und als in einem Lehrbuch sinnvoll behandelt. Auf der anderen Seite muBte manches weggelassen oder nur knapp angedeutet werden.
