Bedrohlich sind dabei im Gegensatz zu einer Reihe anderer Tumoren die steilen Zuwachsraten, die sich erst seit kurzem, wenigstens beim Mann, etwas abflachen. Diese Situation war AnlaB, allgemeine Probleme, Diagnostik und Therapie der Neoplasmen von Bronchien, Lunge, Pleura, Mediastinum und Brustwand ausfUhrlich monographisch darzustellen. 1m deutschsprachigen Raum, aber auch international, ist uns aus dem letzten Jahrzehnt kein derartiges, alle Aspekte umfassendes Werk bekannt. In Fortsetzung der Tradition des Handbuches der inneren Medizin wurde vor allem auf thematische Vollstandigkeit und ausreichenden Quellennachweis Wert gelegt, um dem Leser vor allem Einarbeitung, Beantwortung bestimmter Fragen und Hinweise auf Raritaten und weiterfUhrende Spezialarbeiten zu er moglichen. Dabei ist es heute angesichts der zunehmenden Fiille einschlagiger Arbeiten und der obligaten Internationalisierung unseres Wissens kaum mehr moglich, die friiher iibliche vollstandige Wiedergabe der internationalen Litera tur anzubieten. Wie auch andere Teile der Neuauflage des Handbuches, sollte das vorliegende, durch den Umfang des Stoffes notwendigerweise zweibandige Werk auch einen in sich geschlossenen monographischen Charakter bekommen, der eine von den anderen Banden unabhangige Anschaffung und Nutzung er moglicht. Urn der von einem Handbuch verlangten Spezialisierung des Wissens heute noch gerecht werden zu konnen, war die Beteiligung einer Vielzahl von fachkun digen Autoren unumganglich.
