Das Buch basiert auf der Dissertationssehrift "Konzepte der Wissensbereitstellung in Expertensystemen: Inferenzmechanismen auf relationalen Datenbanken", die ich im Fruhjahr 1983 an der Universitat Dortmund absehloss. Das darin gelegte Fundament erhielt zahlreiehe Erganzungen, ein neues Kapitel zum Thema "PROLOG und Datenbanken" und Hinweise auf aktuelle Literatur. Dabei waren Erfahrungen aus einer im Wintersemester 84/85 an der EfH Zurich gehaltenen Vorlesung mit dem Titel "Wissensbasierte Systeme" hilfreieh. Auf dem langen Weg von ersten Fassungen der Dissertationssehrift bis zum vorliegenden Buchmanuskript haben mich viele Mensehen unterstutzt, denen ieh an dieser Stelle geme danke. A.B. Cremers, mein Doktorvater, und J. Biskup, Mitbetreuer und zweiter Gutachter der Dissertationsschrift, haben die Arbeit in Dortmund mit wertvollen Anregungen, kritischen Bemerkungen und aufmuntemden Worten begleitet Konstruktive Beitrage kamen aueh von H.H. Bruggemann und H. Bense. O. Fuhlrott machte gute Vorschllige flir eine kompaktere Darstellung des Stoffes und gab nutzliche Hinweise auf aktuelle Ver6ffentlichungen. In der Zurcher Zeit seit Anfang 1984 hat mir die Diskussionsbereitschaft von Mitarbeitem des Instituts fUr Informatik der EfH, insbesondere von M. Ester, H. Jasper, J.A. Makowsky und A. Ultsch sehr geholfen.
