Es wird deutlich werden, daB das meiste von dem, was die Chemie zur Umgestaltung unserer Welt beigetragen hat, nur durch die Untermauerung mit den Gesetzen der Physik moglich gewesen ist. Das Wesen der physikalischen Chemie ist namlich, die qualitativen Knderungen, die wir als chemische Reaktionen bezeichnen, quantitativ zu untersuchen und zu verstehen. Das setzt natiirlich bei dem schopferischen Forscher griindliche Kenntnisse der Chemie, aber auch der Physik und der Mathematik voraus, und alIes dies sind Hemmnisse flir eine ge- meinverstandliche DarstelIung. Trotzdem solI der Versuch unternommen werden, mit einem Minimum von chemischen Stoffkenntnissen und chemischen Vor- aussetzungen auszukommen und iiberdies nicht die mathematischen Entwicklungen darzustellen, die zu den Ergebnissen gefiihrt haben, sondern diese selbst, moglichst des Gewandes der Mathematik ent- kleidet. Der Verfasser hofft, daB es ihm dabei gelungen ist, das recht eigenartige und ungewohnliche Gebaude der physikalischen Chemie dem gebildeten Laien verstandlich zu machen und zu zei- gen, wie durch die beschriebene Durchdringung mehrerer Wissen- schaften chemische Reaktionen in neuem Lichte erscheinen und weiterer Anwendung zum Wohl der Menschheit zuganglich ge- worden sind.
