Der Vater, der damals 43jahrige Naturphilosoph LORENZ OKEN - ein revolutionarer Geist, der drei Jahre zuvor wegen seines politischen Kampfes urn das Recht der Meinungsfreiheit seines Amtes als Professor cler Universitat Jena enthoben worden war -, nahm zielbewuBt die Erziehung seines SproBlings in die Hand und versammelte jahrlich am 18. September bedeutende Naturforscher und Arzte der deutschen Lande, urn mit ihnen fest- lich den Geburtstag seines Kindes zu begehen und urn bei dieser Gelegenheit die eingeladenen Freunde untereinander bekannt zu machen und sich gegen- seitig "dasjenige mitzutheilen, was man in der Zeit gedacht und gethan". Diese jahrlichen Geburtstagsfeiern, die sich wachsender Beliebtheit erfreuten, entwickelten sich, insbesondere nachdem ALEXANDER VON HUMBOLDT und spa- ter RUDOLF VIRCHOW einen starken EinfluB auf die Versammlungen ausgeiibt hatten, mehr und mehr zu einer wissenschaftlichen Heerschau, auf der Geistes- fiirsten wie FuBvolk iiber neue und neueste Entwicklungen der Naturforschung und Medizin zu Gericht saBen.
