Dieses Buch möchte eine Einführung zu einem der aufregendsten Probleme geben, die der Mensch kennt - der Differenzierung lebender Zellen. Wie entstehen die Unterschiede der diversen Zelltypen eines einzelnen Organismus, -die letztendlich alle derselben befruchteten Eizelle entstammen? Diese Frage, die einmal während meiner Studentenzeit von einem Dozenten gestellt wurde, hat seitdem meine Neugier gefesselt. Ich hoffe, da dieses Buch dazu beiträgt auch bei dem einen oder anderen Leser ein ähnliches Interesse zu erwecken. Während ich dieses Buch schrieben habe, war ich mir darüber im klaren, da 'Über-Vereinfachungen' zustande kommen würden. Kaum eines der angeführten Experimente oder Beobachtungen stellt sich beim Lesen der Original-Veröffent- lichung als so eindeutig oder so unkompliziert dar, wie es im einen oder anderen Abschnitt erscheinen mag. Vermutlich gehört dies zum Wesen der Wissenschaft. Der Versuch einer Synthese in einem weitverzweigten Gebiet wie der Differen- zierung, ähnelt sehr einem Hausbau mit Steinen, die aus unterschiedlichstem Material sind und aus den verschiedensten Gegenden stammen. Damit meine ich nur, da Beweisstücke die sich zu einem Modell zusammenbauen lassen, aus sehr unterschiedlichen Systemen entnommen werden können: das eine kann eine Virus-infizierte Leberzelle sein, das andere vielleicht eine marine Alge. Wie auch an einer anderen Stelle dieses Buches zum Ausdruck kommt, sind die Bereiche, in denen 'Theoretisieren' am einfachsten, aber auch am wenigsten gewinnbringend ist, solche, die nur wenig verstanden sind. Mir scheint, da die biologische Wissenschaft in ein Stadium getreten ist, in dem der Versuch einer Zusammen- fassung aller Aspekte der Differenzierung sinnvoll erscheint. Deshalb dieses Buch.
