Vorlesungen zur EinfUhrung in die Chemie haben sich in letzter Zeit deutlich gewandelt. Die Grundlage bilden heute im allgemei- nen umfassende Prinzipien, wie etwa die der chemischen Thermo- dynamik. Diese Entwicklung ist zwar einerseits sehr zu begrilBen, sie bringt aber andererseits auch eine Reihe padagogischer Schwie- rigkeiten mit sich. Frilher wandten sich Thermodynamik-Vorle- sungen fast ausschlieBlich an Studenten hoherer Semester, bei de- nen ein gewisses mathematisches Grundwissen vorausgesetzt wer- den durfte. Ahnlich, wenn auch auf entsprechend niedrigerem Ni- veau, sind kurzlich erschienene Begleittexte zu Schnellkursen fUr Studienanfanger der Chemie aufgebaut. Diese Monographien und Lehrbucher sind sicherlich gut geeignet fUr speziell geschulte Stu- denten, die nebenbei Mathematikvorlesungen besuchen. Mit der vorliegenden Monographie wenden wir uns an eine gro- Bere und vielleicht auch wichtigere Gruppe - namlich an jene Stu- denten, die eine einfUhrende Chemievorlesung horen, sich aber nicht notwendigerweise weiterhin mit N aturwissenschaften be- schaftigen wollen. Auch dieser Gruppe mussen die ubergeordneten Zusammenhange der Chemie verdeutlicht werden, das Zusammen- piel zwischen experimentellen Ergebnissen und theoretischen Uberlegungen. Die Thermodynamik bietet dazu Gelegenheit. Das Hauptinteresse dieser Gruppe liegt jedoch nicht in erster Linie dar- in zu lemen, wie man auf einfache Weise mit thermodynamischen Gleichungen umgeht, sondem vielmehr darin zu verstehen, was die thermodynamischen Grundsatze eigentlich aussagen und welche Folgerungen man daraus ziehen kann. Diesem Gesichtspunkt wol- len wir besondere Beachtung schenken.
