When the size and the shape of materials are reduced to the nanoscale dimension, their physical and chemical properties can change dramatically. This book demonstrates the controlled size and shape of nanostructured materials and their applications. The applications cover photocatalysts, biomedicals, nanomaterials, fuel cells and supercapacitors, lithium-ion batteries, light-emitting diodes, and field emission display. This book may be the first to clearly point out the relationship between the size and the structure of the materials, which strongly affects their properties. Understanding these control parameters has important technological implications for energy conversion and storage, biotechnology, lighting and display, and so forth.

Ru-Shi Liu is a professor in the Department of Chemistry, National Taiwan University, Taiwan. He received his bachelor's degree in chemistry from Shoochow University, Taiwan, in 1981 and his master's degree in nuclear science from National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan, in 1983. He obtained two PhDs in chemistry -- one from National Tsing Hua University (1990) and the other from the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom (1992). Prof. Liu worked at Materials Research Laboratories at the Industrial Technology Research Institute, Taiwan, from 1983 to 1985. He was an associate professor at the Department of Chemistry, National Taiwan University, from 1995 to 1999, when he was promoted to professorship. Prof. Liu's research focuses on materials chemistry. He is the author or coauthor of more than 400 publications in international scientific journals. He has also been granted more than 80 patents.
