Cayton, Horace R.: - Horace R. Cayton (1908-1970) was born in Seattle, Washington. His maternal grandfather was Hiram R. Revels, the first African American ever to be elected to the United States Senate, and his father, a prominent newspaper publisher in the northwest. Educated at the University of Washington, he became a research assistant at the University of Chicago, a Rosenwald Fellow, and taught at the University of California.
