Integration refers to multi-scale modelling and model updating, multi-type sensor placement, control theory, and collective placement of control devices and sensors. And the functions include structural health monitoring, structural vibration control, structural self-repairing, and structural energy harvesting, with emphasis on their synthesis to form truly smart civil structures. It suits civil engineering students, professionals, and researchers with its blend of principles and practice.

Professor. Y. L. Xu is Chair Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Construction and Environment of the University at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He is also author of: "Structural Health Monitoring of Long-Span Suspension Bridges" also published by CRC Press.

Dr. J. He is a postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, focusing on smart civil structures through the synthesis of structural health monitoring, vibration control, energy harvesting and self-repairing.
