In the summer of 1938, a team of four young men for the first time successfully climbed the North Face of the Eiger, a notoriously difficult mountain face in Switzerland. On the long ascent, the team survived rockfalls, storms, and near-death experiences on this mountain face that had already claimed six lives in the preceding three years. The climb took the team a grueling 96 hours.

In the winter of 2008, Ueli Steck, a leading Swiss alpinist, made the same ascent up the North Face of the Eiger. He climbed alone and carried little more than two technical ice axes and a small backpack. He reached the summit in less than three hours.

Steck's approach was simple: he climbed light and he climbed fast.

In business, the stakes may be different, but the difficulties are the same. With volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity (VUCA) everywhere, successfully reaching the summit depends on how you approach the mountain.

About The Author

PATRICK HOLLINGWORTH is an experienced mountaineer, an in-demand international speaker, mentor and consultant, and a TEDx presenter. He works with people, teams and organisations to help them deal with a world which is becoming more volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous by the day.

Patrick is based in Australia and travels internationally to work for a wide range of clients. These include multinational companies such as British retailer Marks and Spencer, American energy giant Chevron and British-Australian mining company Rio Tinto, through to mid-sized, Australian, Asian and European banks, medical and technology companies, and government departments and educational institutions.

Patrick's mountaineering has taken him to great heights--literally. He's summited multiple 8000 metre peaks, including Mount Everest, and over the past 15 years has been a member of small light and fast alpine-style teams and has led rather large heavy and slow expedition-style teams. He's seen the very best of what alpine style can offer, and also the very worst of what expedition style can deliver.
