Diese Arbeit ist die �berarbeitete Fassung meiner im M�rz 1989 von der Fakult�t f�r Sozialwissenschaften der Universit�t Mannheim angenommenen Dissertation. Sie besch�ftigt sich mit der Frage, wie es geschehen kann, da bestimmte Politik- bereiche, die �ber lange Zeit von der �ffentlichkeit wenig beachtet wurden, pl�tz- lich zum Brennpunkt von kollektivem B�rgerprotest in der spezifischen Gestalt ei- ner sozialen Bewegung mit breiter Massenbasis werden. Diese allgemeine Pro- blemstellung wird am Beispiel der Friedensbewegung untersucht, an deren Protestaktionen gegen die Sicherheitspolitik der amtierenden Bundesregierungen zu Beginn der achtziger Jahre Hunderttausende von B�rgern der Bundesrepublik teilgenommen haben. Eine der Hauptthesen der Untersuchung besagt, da soziale Bewegungen vielf�ltige Ressourcen mobilisieren m�ssen, um ihren Anliegen in der politischen Willensbildung Geltung zu verschaffen und Erfolge zu erzielen. Ressourcen mobilisieren -das m�ssen auch Doktoranden. Eine wichtige Res- source in dieser ganz speziellen Lebenslage sind Freunde und Kollegen, die mit Rat und Tat zur Seite stehen und dadurch helfen, das Projekt zu einem guten Ende zu bringen. Mein besonderer Dank gilt Prof. Dr. Rudolf Wildenmann. W�hrend der langj�hrigen Zusammenarbeit im Projekt "Sicherheitspolitischer Konsens", aus dem diese Studie hervorgegangen ist, hat er mir Gelegenheit gegeben, eigenst�n- dige wissenschaftliche Interessen zu entwickeln, meine Arbeit gro z�gig gef�rdert und mich wohlwollend und beharrlich zur Fertigstellung der Untersuchung ermu- tigt.
