Modern Media, Elections and Democracy studies the functions of media in a democracy, with a particular focus on election times when it plays a crucial role in educating people and shaping public opinion. At such times, it becomes an arena for public debate and even acts as a check against the abuse of power. The book analyses the constraints that limit the immense power of the media. It addresses issues restricting free political debate and examines the statutory provisions that defend and protect freedom of expression. It explores these tenets through various legal suits, case studies, jurisprudences governing election coverage, international standards for media practices and more. The book identifies how different forms of media influence politics and argues that modern media, in all its forms, is expanding the scope of political pluralism.
