Dieses Buch uber die Sinnwelt Freizeit ist im Rahmen einer allgemeinen Theorie der gesellschaftlichen Differenzierung anzusiedeln, wie sie vor allem im Kontext des Strukturfunktionalismus und der Systemtheorie entwickelt wurde. Der gesellschaftliche Wandel wird darin auf der Systemebene als zunehmende Ausdifferenzierung von spezialisierten Subsystemen beschrie- ben (funktionale Differenzierung), auf der sozialen Ebene als ProzeB der zunehmenden Heterogenisierung und Pluralisierung von Lebenslagen und Lebensstilen (soziale Differenzierung). Durch die Entstandardisierung und zunehmende Individualisierung der Lebenslagen, so die These, werden die Menschen zugleich aus kollektiven klassen- oder schichtspezifischen Tradi- tionen und Kulturen freigesetzt (Beck 1986; Zapf 1987). Eine Sphare sozial- struktureller Unbestimmtheit (Berger 1987) dehnt sieh aus und ermoglicht die Entwicklung von frei wahlbaren und somit starker individualisierten Lebensstilen. Ein wesentlicher Trager dieses Prozesses sind die Kommunika- tionsmedien (Eckert & Winter 1987), die immer weitere Bereiche der menschlichen Existenz durchdringen. Sie sind auf der einen Seite fUr die Diffusion von kulturellen Orientierungen und Lebensstilen verantwortlie- was zur Einebnung lokaler und regionaler kultureller Formen und damit zu einer Allerweltskultur fuhrt. Sie dienen andererseits jedoch auch als Medium fur die Entwicklung von neuen kulturellen Formen und Praktiken entlang individueller Interessen und bilden den Markt, auf dem sich diese zu Spezial- kulturen zusammenschlieBen konnen. Damit tragen sie zu einer forderten Differenzierung und Pluralisierung der Lebenstile und KuIturformen bei. Eine historisch-typologische Darstellung dieser Entwicklung von Spezial- kulturen vor dem Hintergrund der Evolution der Kommunikationsmedien, Winter, R. & Eckert, R.: "Wahlnachbarschaften - von der Verwandlung der Welt durch die Medien", erscheint demnachst.
