1m Dezember vergangenen Jahres fand aus Anlaf des 80. Geburtstages von Wilhelm Emi! MUhlmann ein interdisziplinares Symposium an der Universitat Augsburg statt, das den wechselseitigen Einfluf der beiden sozialwissenschaftlichen Disziplinen Soziologie und Ethnologie zum Thema hatte. Eine besondere I3indung an die durch die Thematik umrissene Wechselbeziehung zwischen beiden Bereichen ergab sich bei allen Referenten und Diskutanten des Symposiums, durchweg Hochschullehrer fUr Soziologie oder Ethnologie, aus deren frUherer Zugehorigkeit zum Heidelberger Institut fUr Soziologie und Ethnologie, einer Griindung MUhlmanns aus dem Jahre 1960. Die in diesem Band publizierten Originalarbeiten sind zum groBten Tei! tiber- arbeitete Fassungen der damals vorgetragenen Referate - hier bewuf t "un-diszipliniert" in der relativ zwanglosen Abfolge des Symposium-Programms dargeboten: zwecks Vermeidung jedes gerade in diesem Kontext unangebrachten Anspruchs auf strenge Systematik und zur Verdeutlichung des explorativen und transzendierenden Charak- ters der Beitrage. Diese reflektieren, teils explizit, teils implizit, die fruchtbare Aus- einandersetzung und wechselseitige Orientierung, die sich beim grenz- und disziplin- tiberschreitenden ErkenntnisprozeB ergibt, wobei die Einbeziehung von Anthropologie, Literatur-, Geschichts- und Kommunikationswissenschaft und sogar der bei uns noch unetablierten "Women's Studies" in die soziologisch-ethnologische Aspektstruktur gewissermaBen als kulturwissenschaftliche Selbstverstandlichkeit erscheint; sie aile stellen Variationen zum groBen Thema "Gesellschaft" dar.
