Die Idee zu dem Thema dieser Arbeit entstand wlihrend der Mitarbeit an einem Forschungsprojekt, in dem Teile der Par- sonsschen Theorie empirisch uberprUft. werden solI ten. Obwohl man zunachst bei der Suche nach Beispielen fur eine gelungene Verbindung von Theorie und Empirie in der Soziologie nicht an Parsons denkt, weist sein Werk vielfaltige Bezuge zur empi- rischen Forschung auf. Parsons hat bereits in seinem Fruhwerk "The Structure of Social Action" ein anspruchsvolles methodo- logisches Programm entwickelt, das er im Verlauf seines Werkes umzusetzen versuchte. Dabei legte er sich methodisch nicht auf eine bestimmte Strategie fest, wodurch sich an seinem Werk eine groBe V riationsbreite von m8g1ichen empirischen Methoden aufzeigen la8t. Diese Arbeit soll sich gegenuber den vorlie- genden Studien vor allem dadurch abheben, da8 sie neben der wissenschaftstheoretischen und methodologischen Analyse von Parsons' Erkllirungsprogramm auch dessen Anwendung in den konkreten theoretischen und empirischen Arbeiten aufzeigen will. Zu besonderem Dank bin ich Richard MUnch verpflichtet, der mich wahrend der Vorberei tung und Durchfuhrung dieser Arbei t auf vielfaltige Weise unterstUtzte und mir Wege aufzeigte, die soziologische Theorie nicht aus dem Auge zu verlieren. Weiter- hin danke ich Karl-Heinz Saurwein und Paul Compes fUr die anregenden Diskussionen, die mir den Zugang zu dem Thema erleichtert haben.
