About The Book

In the winter of 1943, while the trains were loading, the fishermen took their boats out.

They were Sephardic Jews of Thessaloniki, men who had learned to read the Aegean before they learned to read books. What they knew was the sea at night: the currents, the silences, the exact window between one German patrol and the next. What they did with that knowledge was carry six hundred people to safety in the dark, one crossing at a time, without weapons, without recognition, and without leaving a single written record behind.

This is the story of what they did, and of the civilization they were trying to save, and of the forty-six thousand people they could not reach in time.

It is a book about courage that did not announce itself. About a community that carried medieval Spain in its language and ancient Palestine in its prayers, and built something irreplaceable on the shores of northern Greece for four and a half centuries, before the trains came and took most of it away.

The sea is still there. The boats are gone. The names of the men who sailed them are in these pages, at last.

Based on twelve years of archival research across Israel, Greece, France, and Germany, drawing on survivor testimonies from Yad Vashem and the Jewish Museum of Thessaloniki.
