Globalization is a process through which an increasingly free flow of ideas, people, goods, services and capital would lead to the integration of economies and societies. It is characterized by an accelerated trade, capital, and information, as well as mobility of individuals across geographical borders.
Globalization once considered to be a panacea for all ills, is now being viewed as fraught with many dangers. For example, the financial crisis triggered by subprime lending in America would not have spread to other parts of the world in the absence of globalization. Manufactures of various types of products are able to flood the markets in developing countries, where local manufacturers and traders continue to suffer. The market liberalization policies that the World Bank and International Monetary Fund have been pushing for the last two or three decades have failed to generate significant per capita income growth in most regions of the developing countries. Those are some of the challenges of globalization.
The book addresses a range of critically important areas relating to globalization. It focuses on the raging debates surrounding the economic, social and environmental dimensions of globalization. The contributors to this volume look at global financial crisis; free trade; the evidence on poverty and global inequality; capital flows and impact of foreign direct investments in developing countries; climate change and food security; environmental consequences of unrestrained markets; hunger, poverty and food security; and relationship between international economic policies and national economic growth rates.
The objective of this book is to provide varied insights to policymakers, academicians and students, in order to promote a free, equitable and productive global environment. It will be of great value for researchers and students of economics, political science, international relations, and environmental and development studies.
