About The Book

The Nawabs of Savanur presents a compelling exploration of the political, administrative, socio-economic and religious history of North Karnataka, focusing on Dharwad, Belgaum and Bijapur (South of the Krishna River) under the rule of the Nawabs of Savanur. Spanning from 1672 to 1948, this period witnessed the transformation of the Nawabs from independent rulers to a princely state with significant territorial changes. In the sphere of religion, the Nawabs of Savanur fostered a culture of harmony and inclusion, allowing religious festivals from diverse communities to flourish. While devout, the Nawabs practiced tolerance, granting lands to Brahmins, Lingayats and others without religious bias, and refraining from demolishing temples or mathas on religious grounds. Their reign also marked advancements, including an early printing press and a judicial system that became a model for other princely states. This pioneering work introduces readers to a vital chapter of North Karnataka’s history and opens new avenues for historical research, laying a foundation for further independent works on this richly complex region and its leaders.

About The Author

Dr. K. N. Chitnis, former Professor and Head of the Department of History at Savitribai Phule Pune University (formerly University of Poona) is a distinguished scholar known for his extensive contributions to historical research. His latest book, Glimpses of Maratha Socio-Economic History has been highly acclaimed by The Indian Historical Review for introducing "a new conceptual framework and analytical thrust" to the subject. His notable works include Keladi Polity, Medieval Indian History, Socio-Economic History of Medieval India and Research Methodology in History. A true polyglot, he is fluent in English, Sanskrit, Kannada, Marathi, Hindi and the Modi script, with a basic understanding of Persian, particularly in relation to administrative and economic matters.
