The book explores the emerging sandwich cultures of Indian diaspora in three countries, namely Trinidad, the United States of America and Thailand. These countries provide a varied picture of Indians settled abroad, ranging from indentured labour in Trinidad, to highly educated professionals in the United States of America. The Indians in Bangkok fall in between these two countries. Not only the circumstances under which people migrated to these countries differed, but also their socio-economic backgrounds were heterogeneous. The conditions faced by them and their personal experiences in the host countries also varied. All these factors affected their adaptation to local cultures and adjustment in the host society.
Sandwich culture paradigm has been used to analyse the emerging sandwich cultures in these three countries. The various studies relating to these countries and carried out by scholars—both Indian and foreign—manifest in different theoretical frameworks have been waded through to cull out the relevant data to test the theory of sandwich cultures.

Surendra K. Gupta, is a retired Professor of Sociology from Punjabi University Patiala. Currently, he is associated with Indian Association of Social Science Institutions, New Delhi and is working as its Member Secretary. He also taught at University of Saugar and in USA. His first book Citizen in the Making (1975) was a pioneering study in India on Political Socialization. His other publications include India in the Year A.D. 2000 (1989), co-authored with Iqbal Narain; Conflict and Communication: Mass Upsurge in India (1990), co-authored with Indira B. Gupta; and Indians in Thailand (1999). He also has an edited book, Emerging Social Science Concerns: Festschrift in Honour of Yogesh Atal (2004). Besides, he has contributed a number of articles in many edited volumes and in professional journals of repute. He is a member of many professional bodies.
