India’s North-East has been the subject of much debate and interpretations since Independence. Beginning with the earliest challenge to the nation-building process, this highly diverse and multicultural region has, through its multiple identity movements and militant separatism, thrown up several major issues that have resulted in the redrawing of the parameters of the Indian nation state and, eventually, redefined the idea of nationalism itself.    The essays and commentaries in this volume, written over three decades, throw light not only on the complex processes of the nation state’s engagement with the autonomy and secessionist demands emanating from the region, but also focus on the contradictions and new equations that have been emerging both within these movements and in the State’s response to them. Each one of the identity movements has been enmeshed in its own contradictions, resulting in a distinct moving away from their stated goals. On the other hand, the Indian nation state, through its policy of repression, negotiation and accommodation, has itself been passing through what may be termed as ‘India's North-East Experience’.   Exploring in-depth the factors behind the rise of ethnic nationalist assertions, the role of civil society in conflict situations, the rise of exclusivist politics, and the question of citizens’ rights, this volume presents an incisive, wide-angled study of India and her North-East.
