Henty, G. a.: - G. A. Henty was a British novelist, journalist, war correspondent, and one of the most prolific writers of historical adventure fiction for young readers. Born in 1832, George Alfred Henty reported from several nineteenth-century conflicts before turning much of his experience with travel, warfare, empire, and military history into fiction. His novels typically place a young protagonist inside a major historical crisis, combining adventure, battles, escapes, political upheaval, and factual historical background in a form designed for instruction as well as entertainment.Henty's books became widely read in Britain and America and remain of interest to readers of classic juvenile fiction, homeschool history, military adventure, and traditional historical novels for young people. His work reflects the assumptions of Victorian Britain and should be read with awareness of its period attitudes, but his narrative method-placing young characters amid decisive historical events-made him one of the best-known authors of educational adventure fiction. For the Temple, first published in 1888, is one of his ancient-world novels and centres on the Jewish revolt against Rome, the siege of Jerusalem, and the end of the Second Temple period.
