On the windswept shores of Galveston Island, a legend lingers in the shifting dunes. Centuries ago, a young Karankawa boy named Tahu is saved from a deadly storm by a mysterious wolf. His people come to believe in the "Ghost Wolves"... silent guardians who watch over the island and its fragile balance.

In the present day, twelve-year-old Juan arrives on the island carrying the weight of his mother's death. Uprooted from his old life, he struggles to adjust to the unfamiliar rhythms of the Gulf Coast. Living with his grandmother, Juan finds quiet comfort in her steady presence, but it is his friendship with Mateo... a boy who lives nearby in a small, weathered house that begins to draw him back into the world. Though Mateo faces hardships of his own, his resilience and curiosity help Juan rediscover a sense of purpose.

As the boys explore the dunes and shoreline, they encounter an unusual coyote... long-legged, wary, and marked with a faint reddish tint. This is She-Alpha, a mother coyote fighting to protect her pups as development encroaches on her habitat. At the same time, scientists studying the island's coyotes discover something remarkable: traces of red wolf DNA, linking these animals to a species once declared extinct in the wild.

What begins as curiosity soon becomes conviction. Guided by Juan's grandmother and inspired by what they've learned, Juan and Mateo take action... raising awareness at school, speaking to their community, and standing before local leaders to defend the dunes and the wildlife that depend on them. As their voices grow stronger, the boys begin to understand that the legend of the Ghost Wolves may not be a myth at all, but a living connection between the island's past and present.

Told in alternating perspectives, including that of She-Alpha, the story weaves together human struggle and animal survival. As the fate of the dunes hangs in the balance, Juan's journey becomes one of healing. The island that once felt strange becomes home, and his grief begins to give way to purpose.

Island of the Ghost Wolves is a middle-grade novel that blends myth and modern conservation, exploring themes of loss, resilience, and belonging. At its heart, it is a story about finding one's voice-and discovering that even in a changing world, some guardians still remain.
