Antlers: Stories From the Heart of the Hunt

How do you feel about big game hunting? Many see it as a crude relic of an unenlightened past. Most hunters have a list of well reasoned justifications for pursuing and harvesting big game animals that they can recite with conviction. Seeking trophy antlers is not usually at the top of a list of socially correct rationales. However, serious hunters would be lying if they said antlers did not have something to do with their drive to spend a great deal of time and money in such a physically demanding avocation.

For most hunters, though, there is something more-

Antlers is an anthology of three fictional stories that explore some of the more nuanced and subjective reasons that hunters will always hunt. These underlying motives are seldom articulated or openly acknowledged, but they exert a gravity-like force that pulls hunters into the field, year after year.

The relatable characters you will meet in these stories are not immune to trophy seeking tendencies but they all either possess or discover something deeper and far more meaningful than just antlers that calls them to the chase.

Short, Marty D.: - Marty Short has spent a lifetime hunting and fishing, backpacking, horse packing, and just drifting in the mountains and steppes of the west, building a wealth of memories of wild places, adventures, and the people that shared them. Marty's fondness for the big landscapes and public lands of the west was heightened by many years spent traveling extensively to compete in high school, college and professional rodeo as a saddle bronc rider. A University of Wyoming graduate in agricultural economics, Marty has spent a 36-year career in the livestock feed and nutrition business working in sales, consulting and management. Marty and his wife, Billie are blessed with four adult children and a handful of grandchildren who are all actively pursuing their own adventures. He continues to spend as much time as he can in the back country with family, friends, and the indispensable help of good horses.
