This is the extraordinary story of a shrine that rose between the mine dumps in one of the rougher pockets of Johannesburg.

For decades, the Rand Stadium played host to the (all-white) giants of local and international football. Shortly before the 1976 Soweto riots, the venue served as the setting for an explosive black versus white fixture in this, one of the most segregated societies on the planet. Jack Taylor (OBE), who blew the whistle that night, refereed the World Cup final the previous year. But nothing could have prepared him for the night the beautiful game came of age in this troubled land. The match was coloured by plenty of on-field controversy (and a full-blown riot in the stands). And yet, the sight of tens of thousands of spectators of all races also celebrating together marked a seminal moment in the history of South African sport.

Black v White tells the story of a stadium that was a symbol of white might before turning rank and falling into squalor and disrepair, and of a venue that subsequently rose from the ashes and became a symbol of the "new" South Africa. It also reflects on the transformation of the national squad, which has finally become a force on the African continent and qualified for the 2026 World Cup.

Black v White unpacks the Springbok miracle and how the world champions united the nation and passed the baton on to Bafana Bafana ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
