Jahrhunderts wurde die Koedukation, die gemeinsame Erziehung von Jungen und M�dchen, an den Schulen der Bundesrepublik Deutschland eingef�hrt. Die Verwirklichung koedukativer Ma nahmen wurde sowohl hier als auch in der DDR, wo die Koedukation bereits im Jahre 1946 gesetzlich verankert wurde, als entscheidender Schritt zur Demokratisierung der Bildungschancen angesehen. Elementares Anliegen und Ziel war die Gleichberechtigung der Geschlechter. Heute, gut drei ig Jahre nach ihrer Einf�hrung, scheint die Koedukation mehr denn je in der Kritik zu stehen. Auch wenn erste Zweifel hinsichtlich der tats�chlichen Vorteile des koedukativen Unterrichts bereits Mitte der 80er Jahre vorlagen, so haben insbesondere die Ergebnisse der Neuen Frauenbewegung dazu gef�hrt, dass die Koedukationsdebatte die Bildungspolitik zunehmend besch�ftigt. Hauptinhalt dieser Debatte ist die Frage danach, ob Koedukation ihren eigentlichen Sinn und Zweck nicht verfehlt habe. Basis und Bezugspunkt der momentanen Kontroverse sind dabei Forschungsergebnisse, die belegen, dass M�dchen im koedukativen Unterricht benachteiligt werden, Chancengleichheit also keineswegs gegeben ist. Des weiteren wurde festgestellt, dass auch Jungen im geschlechtergemischten Unterricht nicht in dem Ma e sozialisiert werden, dass dem Wunsch nach Gleichwertigkeit der Geschlechter ausreichend entsprochen wird. Aufgrund dieser Tatsachen wird vermehrt die Forderung nach - zumindest zeitweiliger - Trennung der Geschlechter im Unterricht ge�u ert. Davon betroffen ist neben den naturwissenschaftlichen F�cher und den Sprachen vorwiegend auch der Sportunterricht.
