Ha pasado casi un siglo desde que los países centroeuropeos dominaban el fútbol al más alto nivel. En ese tiempo, casi todo ha cambiado: los estilos, los sistemas de entrenamiento y, quizá lo más importante, la industria que rodea al juego. Sin embargo, la idea del fútbol como negocio tiene orígenes lejanos, que se remontan a los años en que las primeras estrellas del firmamento futbolístico europeo se establecieron en los rectángulos verdes más famosos del continente. Todas las épocas han sido ricas en equipos y campeones que han dejado una huella indeleble en el deporte más popular del mundo.


Si en los años posteriores a la Gran Guerra la fama de los mejores futbolistas europeos era un fenómeno puramente urbano, en los años siguientes, en virtud de un escenario totalmente rediseñado, se hizo transversal y comenzó a extenderse, primero a nivel nacional y luego internacional. Se hizo casi automático asociar el rostro de un futbolista con el de un país: Giuseppe Meazza con Italia, Matthias Sindelar con Austria y Györgi Sárosi con Hungría.


Eran los máximos exponentes de un deporte fuertemente contaminado por las vicisitudes políticas y diplomáticas de la época, una etapa que reunía a protagonistas que, directa o indirectamente, habían sufrido las consecuencias de un conflicto cuyas heridas permanecían frescas. En ese marcó nació y se desarrolló la Copa Mitropa, el antecedente de la Champions League, en ese conflictuado escenario de entreguerras. Tan conflictuado que fue el inminente rumor de los cañones el que silenció el discurso de la pelota. Mientras se jugó, entre 1927 y 1940, se alternaron momentos de absoluta deportividad con fases más convulsionadas debido a la inestabilidad política que se cernía sobre el continente y que, de manera inevitable, se reflejaba en los terrenos de juego. Y esa historia es la que se relata en este libro.

Araf, Jo: - Nació el 17 de diciembre de 1985 y siempre le ha apasionado escribir. Trabaja como docente de historia y comunicación en un instituto profesional de Milan; al mismo tiempo es dueño de una agencia de traducción y cofundador de la revista deportiva online Gameofgoals.it. En 2019 publicó su primer libro con la editorial italiana Urbone, fue sobre el Wunderteam ya que le fascinaba la idea de combinar dos de sus mayores intereses: el fútbol y la historia. Aquel libro también ha sido publicado para el mercado británico en 2021 (editorial Pitch Publishing).
