Cet ouvrage dresse, au travers du parcours d'un enseignant-chercheur, un état des lieux de la recherche sur les retombées des événements sportifs pour les territoires d'accueil. La période d'analyse va des années 70 jusqu'au nos jours. Partant du constat d'incohérences dans le choix des outils d'analyse le plus souvent retenus, un cadre théorique adapté à la prise de décision publique est élaboré. Le livre montre la nécessité d'adapter la méthodologie aux caractéristiques des événements sportifs d'une part, des territoires hôtes d'autre part. L'auteur propose ainsi de concevoir l'évéluation non de manière globale, mais au cas par cas, en fonction des objectifs poursuivis par les décideurs publics. C'est la contribution de l'événement sportif au projet territorial pré-existant qui doit alors être appréciée à partir d'une batterie d'indicateurs. Des extensions de l'analyse aux clubs sportifs professionnels et aux grandes infrastructures sportives sont esquissées. Des travaux scientifiques de ce type constribueraient à la clarification des relations entre les parties prenantes du spectacle sportif aujourd'hui basées sur le rapport de force.
