For decades, mental training books have reminded players that the greatest opponent is not across the net, but within. The Inner Way of Tennis, Sport, and Life takes that understanding further-into the deeper inner conflict that quietly blocks access to peak performance and the effortless clarity of the "zone."
This book explores the invisible game that quietly shapes performance: the inner struggle with fear, judgment, pressure, and self-doubt. While technical instruction focuses on strokes and movement, true and lasting improvement begins on the inside - in awareness, attitude, and the relationship a player has with themselves.
Unlike abstract theory or purely philosophical discussion, The Inner Way of Tennis, Sport, and Life is a practical guidebook. Drawing on over 30,000 hours of on-court experience across 25 countries - and informed by Zen, Taoism, and modern mental-wellness practices - this book offers clear, usable methods for applying inner-game principles in real training and competition.
Inside, players learn how to:
Coaches and parents will find tools for:
At its core, this book reframes performance as an inside-out process. Skill has not disappeared - it has simply been divided by attention, outcome-thinking, and identification with results. When awareness returns, ability follows.
Though rooted in tennis, the lessons apply far beyond the court. Whether in sport, work, relationships, or life itself, growth moves only one way: from the inside out.
The Inner Way of Tennis, Sport, and Life is not about trying harder - it's about seeing more clearly, trusting more deeply, and learning to play the game as a whole and complete player.
Scott, Randall D.: - "Randall Scott, a native of North Carolina, recently returned to the United States and is currently serving as the Tennis Director for the City of Burlington while also traveling on the ATP Tour with Japanese player Leo Vithoontien. With a career spanning over 35 years and encompassing 25 countries, Randall has directed programs at prestigious tennis clubs, hotels, and resorts. He has also led clinics and camps for national associations, founded and co-directed three tennis academies, and developed successful after-school programs at two renowned international schools in Thailand.Randall worked with Peter Burwash International, the world's leading tennis management company, for five years, further expanding his expertise in managing world-class tennis programs. Throughout his extensive career, he traveled with players on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junior and Professional Tours, as well as the WTA and ATP Tours, working with players ranked as high as No. 20 in the junior rankings and No. 150 in the professional rankings.A graduate of the University of North Carolina with a B.A. in Philosophy, Randall began his own tennis journey a bit later than most, yet earned a respectable junior ranking in North Carolina. He walked on to the men's tennis team at Elon College before transferring to UNC Chapel Hill, where he earned two varsity letters as a manager/player on the men's tennis team. After university, Randall spent 25 years living, working, and traveling throughout Asia, where he studied and practiced Zen, Buddhism, and Taoism. With over 30,000 hours of on-court experience, he developed a holistic player development philosophy rooted in simple yet highly effective "Inner Way" approaches-through experimenting on both himself and the players he has developed. In his journey he has guided over 9,000 players, from club and resort levels, to internationally ranked juniors, collegiate athletes, and senior competitors. Some players he has facilitated include elite, ITF juniors, college scholarship recipients, WTA/ATP professionals, Olympians, and Davis Cup, Fed Cup, and Asian Games players. The Inner Way of Tennis, Sport, and Life - Playing the Game from Inside Out is his account of this journey."
