Der Bildteil zeigt baugeschichtlich bedeutende, darunter teilweise weniger bekannte, doch für das Verständnis von Entwicklungszusammenhängen wichtige Beispiele in Grundrissen, Schnitten, Ansichten und anschaulichen isometrischen Darstellungen - akribisch Gezeichnetes, das seine Mission nicht verbirgt: ein Nachschlagewerk zu sein, das sich zugleich als Reise in die Vielfalt der mittelalterlichen Architektur versteht. Der Band gehört, wie die ebenfalls in zweiter, verbesserter und ergänzter Auflage vorliegende Stadtbaugeschichte von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart, inzwischen zu den Standardwerken unter den architekturgeschichtlichen Darstellungen.
