In Amerika war es vor allem das von der Natur reichlich geschenkte Erdgas; in Europa mit den Steinkohlen als seinem groBen Brennstoffschatz das Leuchtgas. Beide Arten haben sieh sieherlieh gegenseitig in del' Entwicklung vorwartsgetrieben und aueh andere Brenngasarten maBgeblieh gefOrdert. Heute kennen wir viele Arten von technischen Brenngasen. Die gasformigen Brennstoffe, deren Anteil am gesamten Brennstoffverbraueh absolut und prozentual standig zunimmt, bilden einen der wiehtigsten Pfeiler der modernen Energiewirtschaft. a Die USA verbrauehten im Jahre 1952 bereits uber 400 Milliarden m Erdgas, Europa energiema.l3ig noch nieht einmal den 10.
