Dies hat bereits in einigen Universitaten und Hochschulen zur EinfUhrung entsprechender Lehrveranstaltungen und Praktika gefUhrt. Zu diesem Thema sind in den letzten Jahren zahlreiche Biicher erschienen - bevor- zugt in englischer Sprache -, die in den meisten Fallen fUrden Fachmann zur Fortbildung oder als Nachschlagewerke geeignet sind. Daher und aufgrund der Erfahrungen in der Lehre an der Technischen Universitat Berlin fUr das Fach Optische Ubertragungssysteme ist dieses Buch als Grundlage fUr die Ausbildung in diesem Gebiet gedacht. Um den Vorkenntnissen vor aHem von Studenteq der Elektrotechnik (in dieses Fachgebiet wird sich diese neue Technik am ehesten integrieren lassen) gerecht zu werden, wird anfangs ein relativ weiter Raum der geometrischen Optik und der Wellenoptik gewidmet. Es werden einige Gebiete gestreift, die fUr die Grundlagen nicht unbedingt notwendig erscheinen, jedoch fUr eine spatere Vertiefung wichtig sind. Obwohl die Stufenprofil-Lichtwellenleiter kaum mehr von praktischer Bedeutung sind, sind sie doch als EinfUhrung in die komplexen Zusammenhange geeignet. Daher wurde der theoretischen Behandlung des Stufenprofil- Lichtwellenleiters ahnlich viel Raum gegeben wie dem Gradientenprofil- Lichtwellenleiter, dessen praktische Bedeutung wesentlich grol3er ist. Da die Monomode-Lichtwellenleitergerade in letzter Zeit wieder aufgrol3es Interesse stol3en, werden sie in einem eigenen Kapitel behandelt.
