Elektronische Bauelemente sind im Prinzip veränderliche Widerstände mit nichtlinearem Strom-Spannungsverhalten. Ihre Wirkungsweise beruht auf verschiedenen physikalischen Eigenschaften der Elektrizitätsleitung in festen Körpern, Gasen und im Vakuum. Sie rufen in Stromkreisen Steuerungen hervor, die mit dem Schaltvorgang eines mechanischen Schalters oder eines elektromagnetischen Relais vergleichbar sind. Das Durchschalten wird von den sehr kleinen Ladungsträgern (Elektronen oder Ionen) selbst bewirkt. Es erfolgt daher im Vergleich zu mechanischen Relais praktisch trägheitslos und damit au erordentlich schnell. Neben den beiden mehr oder weniger ausgeprägten Endstellungen "Ein" bzw. "Aus" besitzen die meisten elek- tronischen Bauelemente stetige übergänge von dem einen in den anderen Endzustand, die in der Regel elektrisch, magnetisch, thermisch oder optisch gesteuert werden können. Man verwendet diese Eigenschaft der elektro- nischen Bauelemente zur Steuerung (Verstärkung) oder Umformung einer vorhandenen elektrischen Energieart (z. B. Gleichstrom) in eine andere elek- trische Energieart (z. B. Wechselstrom) oder aber auch zur unmittelbaren Umwandlung der thermischen und quantenmechanischen Vorgänge in elek- tromagnetische Energie und umgekehrt. Alle diese Effekte werden zur Er- zeugung, Verarbeitung, übertragung und Wiedergabe von Nachrichten ", er- schiedenster Art benötigt und bilden die Grundlage der elektrischen Nach- richtentechnik.
