Zu allem Tun wird Energie benötigt. Dabei sind wir Menschen ge- wohnt, Energie zu nutzen meist ohne Bedacht auf Beschränkungen von Energie-Vorräten und auf mögliche schädliche Auswirkungen von Energie-Nutzung. Beides wurde, bedingt durch den raschen Anstieg des weltweiten Energiebedarfs, innerhalb nur weniger Jahrzehnte in jüngster Zeit zu ernsten Problemen für die künftige Entwicklung der Menschheit. Vor ähnlichen Problemen stand die Menschheit auch schon zu frühe- ren Zeiten: Zur Steinzeit, vor ca. 6000 Jahren konnte die Verknappung der Nah- rung für die wachsende Bevölkerung durch Einführung von Ackerbau und Viehzucht behoben werden. Eine weitere Energiekrise erwuchs etwa zur Zeit vom 16. bis 18. Jahrhundert aus der damaligen Entwaldung und Holzverknappung, bedingt durch den zunehmenden Verbrauch an Holz vornehmlich für die Erzverhüttung. Behoben wurde dieser Ener- gieengpa durch die Einführung der Nutzung von Kohle. Lösungsmöglichkeiten der heutigen Energieprobleme werden zwar vielfältig diskutiert, leider oft sehr kontrovers, dies häufig mangels einer ausreichenden Kenntnis aller wesentlichen, zu be- rücksichtigenden Fakten. Diesen Mangel soll das vorliegende Buch zu mindern helfen: Es soll einen überblick aller heute bekannten und denkbaren, menschlicher Nutzung zugänglichen Energie-Quellen geben bezüglich - Umfang von Vorräten und Verbrauch, - Prinzip der jeweiligen Umwandlungen von Primärenergie zu verbraucherseitiger Endenergie, - Wirkungsgrad der Umwandlungen, - Verhältnis von gewinnbarer Energie zu Energie-Aufwand bei Gewinnung und Umwandlung (Energie-Erntefaktor), - Verfügbarkeit der Energie-Quellen, - aus der Energie-Nutzung resultierende Umweltbelastungen.
