Das vorliegende einführende Lehrbuch ist aus einer 4-semestrigen Grundvorlesung entstanden, die in den letzten Jahren wiederholt für Studierende des Faches Ma- schinenbau an der Technischen Hochschule Darmstadt gehalten wurde. Die Dar- stellung wendet sich vorwiegend an Studierende der Ingenieurwissenschaften, dürfte aber auch für Studenten anderer Fächer (etwa Natur- oder Wirtschaftswis- senschaften) von Nutzen sein. Da in der letzten Zeit eine Reihe von zum Teil ausgezeichneten Lehrbüchern über Ingenieurmathematik erschienen ist, ist die Frage nach dem Bedarf eines weiteren Lehrbuches natürlich berechtigt. Ich habe aber das Gefühl, da es nützlich ist, den Ingenieur-Studenten ein Buch in die Hand zu geben, das nach dem Motto "so knapp wie möglich, so ausführlich wie nötig" einerseits wirklich noch ein Lehrbuch ist, andererseits aber auf möglichst kleinem Raum in übersichtlicher Weise etwa den mathematischen Stoff darbietet, der von einem Absolventen des Diplomvorexamens beherrscht werden sollte. Natürlich ist dies nur umri haft zu verstehen, denn das vorliegende Buch kann nicht den An- spruch auf Vollständigkeit erheben, da die Schwankungen der Stoffauswahl im Grundstudium bei den einzelnen ingenieurwissenschaftlichen Fächern zu gro sind. Um dennoch möglichst viel Stoff unterzubringen, ist eine ganze Reihe von Beweisen nur skizziert bzw. ganz weggelassen worden. Dagegen war es mein Be- streben, auf Beispiele im Text keinesfalls zu verzichten. Zur Vertiefung des Stoffes sei z. B. auf das ausgezeichnete 4-bändige Werk von Burg/HaflWille: "Höhere Ma- thematik für Ingenieure" sowie Schwarz: "Numerische Mathematik" verwiesen und dem Leser hiermit wärmstens empfohlen.
