Dem vorliegenden Band 2 der Reihe "Werkstoffe und Bauelemente der Elektrotechnik" mit dem Titel "Halbleiter" liegen zwei Zielsetzungen zugrunde: erstens werden die physikalischen Grundlagen fUr die Funktionsweise von Bauelemen ten auf einer so breiten Basis erarbeitet, daB sie nicht nur auf die in diesem Band behan delten "Standard"-Bauelemente angewendet werden konnen, sondem auch auf eine Vielzahl weiterer spezialisierter Bauelemente (wie z. B. Sensoren), welche erst in spate ren Banden dieser Reihe ausfUhrlich beschrieben werden. Die fUr die Berechnung des Bauelementverhaltens unentbehrlichen Ausgangsgleichungen werden aus den Grund lagen der Festkorper -und Quantenphysik hergeleitet, sowie aus der Gibbschen Thermo dynamik, deren Nutzen dem Leser des ersten Bandes dieser Reihe, "Werkstoffe," bereits bestens vertraut ist. Auch in diesem Band werden nur elementare Grundkenntnisse aus der Physik, Chemie und Mathematik vorausgesetzt, fortgeschrittene Zusammenhange werden in kurzer und teilweise vereinfachter Form eingefUhrt. Das Buch ist so aufge baut, daB der weniger grundlageninteressierte Leser einige dieser - zwangslaufig theo retischer angelegten - Abschnitte iiberschlagen kann, da die Ergebnisse in einem spate ren Kapitel zusarnmengefaBt und leicht verstandlich wiederholt werden. Haufig wird der Leser aber feststellen, daB ein tiefergehendes Verstandnis dennoch das "feeling" fUr das Bauelementverhalten erheblich verbessert und daher zu einem befriedigenderen Er gebnis fUhrt. zweitens wird eine anwendungsnahe und praxisbezogene EinfUhrung in Werkstoffei genschaften der Halbleiter Germanium, Silizium und Galliumarsenid, den Autbau und die elektrische Funktion der am haufigsten angewendeten Halbleiterbauelemente, so wie deren Herstellungstechnologie gegeben."
