Kemsttick dieses Buches ist mein Vortrag "Kartographische Abbildungsverfahren aus mathematischer und historischer Sicht", gehalten wahrend der 7. Tagung der Fachsektion "Geschichte, Philo sophie und Grundlagen der Mathematik" im Herbst 1983 in Ilfeld/Harz. Aus der Ftille des sich anbietenden Materials habe ich nun eine Auswahl getroffen, die nicht zu stark in die Breite ftihrt und den roten Faden der historischen Entwicklung hervor- treten laBt. Dem Leser wird verdeutlicht, welche innigen Verflechtungen zwischen dem Wissensstand von Geodasie und Kartographie sowie dem jeweiligen Stand der Technik bestehen. Mit der Ableitung von Abbildungsformeln und der Untersuchung von Abbildungseigenschaften wird die praktische Anwendbarkeit der Mathematik - insbesondere der Infinitesimalrechnung - tiberzeugend demonstriert. Die mit Abbildungen der Kugeiflache in die Ebene grundsatz- lich verkntipften geometrischen Einschrankungen erfordem ein kritisches und verstandnisvolles Auswerten von ebenen Erdkarten, vor allem von Planisphiiren. Die Fiihigkeit zur anschaulichen Interpretation kartographi- scher Darstellungen sollte heute zum geistigen A1lgemeingut geMren. Mit der Herausarbeitung historischer und entwick- lungsmaBig bedingter Aspekte wird gezeigt, daB eine infor- mative Weltkarte der Gegenwart das Endprodukt eines tiber lahrtausende wahrenden Forschungs- und Erkenntnispro- zesses darstellt.
