Les mat�riaux sont g�n�ralement class�s en m�taux, c�ramiques, polym�res et composites. Les m�taux se divisent en deux cat�gories: les m�taux ferreux (� base de fer) et les m�taux non ferreux comme l'aluminium et le cuivre. La structure interne des m�taux est cristalline, avec des structures cristallines courantes telles que BCC, FCC et HCP. Le comportement des mat�riaux sous diff�rentes charges est d�fini par leurs propri�t�s m�caniques telles que la r�sistance, la duret�, la ductilit�, la t�nacit� et l'�lasticit�. Les processus de traitement thermique tels que le recuit, la normalisation, la trempe et le revenu sont utilis�s pour modifier ces propri�t�s. Les alliages, qui sont des m�langes de m�taux, sont fabriqu�s pour am�liorer les performances des mat�riaux - l'acier �tant l'alliage le plus courant de fer et de carbone. Les diagrammes de phase permettent de comprendre les changements de phases des m�taux en fonction de la temp�rature et de la composition. La corrosion est la d�t�rioration progressive des m�taux due � des r�actions chimiques. Elle peut �tre �vit�e par la peinture, le placage ou la protection cathodique. La m�tallurgie des poudres est une technique moderne de production de pi�ces m�talliques � l'aide de poudres m�talliques.
