Obwohl die Meere rund 71 % der Erdoberfl�che bedecken, hat sich die Geographie im physischen wie im kulturgeographischen Bereich �berwiegend zu einer Wissen- schaft von der festen Erdoberfl�che entwickelt. Die r�umliche und personelle Ver- kn�pfung von Geographie und Ozeanographie am ehemaligen Institut f�r Meeres- kunde in Berlin ist l�ngst Wissenschafts geschichte. Mit zunehmender Spezialisierung auf einerseits maritime und andererseits kontinentale Aufgabenfelder mu te die einst enge und fruchtbare Verbindung fast zwangsl�ufig auseinanderfallen. Mit wenigen Ausnahmen hat die Geographie im deutschen Sprachraum in den letzten Jahrzehnten Meere und K�sten weitgehend unbeachtet gelassen. Der 1964 von PAFFEN unternommene Vorsto , die Notwendigkeit einer "Geogra- phie der Meere" wieder in das Bewu tsein der deutschen Geographie zu r�cken, fand zwar Anerkennung, doch realisiert wurden die bedenkenswerten Vorstellungen kaum. Gerade 2-2,5 % der geographischen Publikationen der letzten Jahre befassen sich mit Meeren und K�sten. An kaum einer unserer zahlreichen Hochschulen wird die- ser bedeutende Raum in der Lehre behandelt. Dieser kleine Band soll dabei helfen, das Defizit ein wenig abzubauen. Daher werden die wesentlichen Fakten aus dem Gebiet der "Physischen Geographie der Meere und K�sten" in m�glichst verst�ndlicher, allerdings sehr komprimierter Form dargestellt und mit Hilfe von Tabellen und Figuren verdeutlicht. Auf die Aus- breitung eigener Standpunkte ist weitgehend verzichtet worden, um die Darstellung nicht mit noch in der Diskussion befindlichen Sachverhalten zu �berfrachten. Das unumg�ngliche vertiefte Studium soll durch die Nennung einer gr� eren Zahl von Quellen erleichtert werden. Allerdings stammen die meisten nicht aus deutscherFeder.
